Prompt #1: Outside the Window: What’s the weather outside your window doing right now? If that’s not inspiring, what’s the weather like somewhere you wish you could be?
Yesterday was amazing! Here in Maine we enjoyed the bounty of a Nor’easter storm. For those of you not familiar with New England weather, a Nor’easter is a storm with big winds and high snowfall amounts. Yesterday we got around 15-18 inches of snow.
Luckily, I only have to shovel the short front step path, my tiny back deck, and clear off my car. This was heavy, wet snow.
Except for shoveling (once very early in the morning and then around lunch time) I stayed inside where it was warm and cozy. It was a productive day for me.
As the day wore on, however, I became distracted by thoughts of cross country skiing.
I stared out the window of my multi-purpose second bedroom at the thick layer of snow. I knew the snow wouldn’t last long. March snow never does. With daily temps rising into the 30s and the sun is getting higher (and feeling warmer) in the sky, the snow depth shrinks each day until one day it is just… gone.
Glancing at my schedule for today, I saw that I only had my part-time job as a “must do” activity. My report time is 2:30 p.m. That means getting ready by around 1:30 p.m.
Except for the activities I had “planned” to do today, my morning was clear.
Could I skip my business tasks and go skiing this morning?
Was I the type of person who could blow off my list of To Do items for the mere joy of playing?
I sat with that idea for several minutes.
No. I am NOT the type of person who does that. I am serious, responsible, and I get too much joy from crossing tasks off my list.
But the idea kept niggling my brain. It became an itch that I couldn’t scratch.
I considered the idea once more.
I glanced at my list. I looked out the window.
Did I dare?
Did I, a woman, who lived life by the rules and routines I accepted as my truth, dare to disrupt the norm?
My eyes dropped to the oracle card I had selected that morning. “You are worth it,” it stated.
This snow is worth it, I realized. A big, beautiful March snow storm and it needed to be enjoyed. It needed to be appreciated.
I made the decision then, to play hookie this morning.
Here’s my new plan for this glorious late winter day:
1. Share this awakening with you
2. Record promised oracle card readings
3. Go play in the snow!
I woke up this morning so excited to know I made a choice to play today instead of sticking with my unnecessarily strict normal pattern of behavior. My heart feels light in anticipation of the fun I am going to have out in the woods on the ski trails.
I share this story with you so that you will occasionally give pause to your normal way of doing things and allow yourself the flexibility to go “off script” occasionally to enjoy life’s magical moments or precious, short-lived opportunities.
We all have choices when it comes to how we use our time. Today, I choose to work, then play, then work.
How will you spend today?
